Shire by the Lobhörner 24 x 24

This is an oil painting on cradled Birch panel, framed in a natural Doug Fir wood floater frame.

The panel measures 24x24” and the outer edge of the frame extends approximately half an inch beyond the panel on each side.

The idea for the Alps series was born during my time spent hiking and hut-hopping through the Swiss and Austrian Alps. What I love about painting landscapes is capturing the feeling a certain place first evoked - freedom, gratitude, presence, WONDER. My hope for these paintings is that they serve as invitations into that sense of wonder and awe. That they would be little windows to a state of mind where you can breathe deeply and for a moment feel a bit more alive. 

We started the morning hiking back into Mürren from Rotstockhütte before continuing east to Lobhornhütte where we would spend the night. The second half of the day was QUITE steep and just as we thought we were getting close we saw a teeny tiny wooden house across the valley another several hundred feet above us with a Swiss flag flapping in the wind. We still had a ways to go. But finally, after a very slow last few miles, we broke through the trees to find layers of green hills (surely full of hobbits) with golden sunlight sitting on the grassy mountain like a crown, the sound of a babbling stream cutting through the valley, and just around the corner, Lobhornhütte - our cozy home for the night. This view felt like something between a prize for finishing a hard hike and a giant warm welcome-home-hug.
